Modern Movies

I have been thinking recently why we watch all the movies we do. What makes a movie BAD? How much cursing is required to make it BAD? How much immodesty is required to make it BAD? How much violence is required to make it BAD? These questions often come up in my mind as well as yours too I'm sure. But why do we watch some movies but then don't watch others? Well either we don't want to watch them or we think they are too BAD. But what makes a movie BAD? Is there a certain dose BAD stuff we can take? Can we handle some of it? Is there a certain dose of drugs we can take? Can we handle some of it? Illegal drugs are bad for the body period. But is there a certain amount of sin that we can 'handle'?

I think pretty much every movie has at least one little thing that is inappropriate. All movies are (of course) made by men, who are depraved. Because of their sinful nature, it is impossible for man to produce something that is free from sin or error. Therefore, we must be careful when we watch movies. There are some "good" movies, in which there is very little objectionable content, and then there are some "bad" ones, which Christians wouldn't dream of watching. Yet there are some inbetween in a gray area, which some Christians wouldn't have a problem watching, whereas other Christians do. I'm not sure how much "bad" stuff would be considered "too much", though. It's nearly impossible to define. But like I said before, we have to be careful about what movies we watch. We must always watch movies from a biblical viewpoint and know when it's time to turn the movie off if it gets too bad. But sometimes a person can become accustomed to watching "bad" movies and the sin doesn't bother them as much as it used to. This is not a good thing, and we should always try to protect our eyes and hearts from seeing sin, which might cause our own hearts to sin.

hhhmmmmm... interesting questions. it is hard to say how much is to much, etc etc etc. but really, you could look at anything like that, books, video games, music..... thought prevoking.

Well, I just typed out a big comment on what you both said. lookes like I'll have to do it again. >:(. oh well. here goes. I agree with what you said Beth, we could take that outlook on all things. And would our lives change if we did? Would Jesus watch a movie with a little bit of cursing and just brush it off?
Emily, what you said is really true. 99.99% of movies have something bad in them because man is sinful and wants to make bad in movies. It isn't an accident that there is cursing, it's on purpose. We know that immodesty is bad, because it leaves a stained image on your brain. Cursing leaves a stained word in your mind. But violence, is it bad? I think gore is but violence is kind of ingrained in a guy, he likes to see heroic (even impossible) feats, huge armies and massive warfare. Whether that desire is right or wrong I don't know. It is hard to stop a movie in the middle of watching it because it's bad. I want to find out what happens! That's called curiousity and curiousity is hard to restrain. That's why we look up videos on www.kids-in-mind.com to see whether they are appropriate. One thing that frustrates me is that this site is more accurate and concerned than a Focus on the Family's site on video reviews! Kids in Mind doesn't even claim to be Christians as far as I know! Well enough said. Let me know if ya'll have any other thoughts on this.

yeah, it's a good idea to read reviews of a movie before you see it. If we're going to see a movie in the theater that's rated PG, my dad always wants me to look up the reasons for why it's rated that.

we like never look up the reviews on movies. and (as chris knows) i have seen a lot of movies. as far as violence goes, idk. it prolly can be as bad as cursing ect ect ect, if you can't handly seeing someone decapitated. i happen to like gross stuff, but if that's wrong, not sure.

Yeah, I really struggle with whether violence is wrong. I don't think it is unless it is gore, and/or focusing on it enough to make the watcher desire to do it to another human being or whatever.

yeah, this is such a touchy subject.
violence? i'm okay with it. gore? no. violence is like, LOTR. it doesn't make me want to go kill an orc or slay goblins (if they existed, stay with me here). but, like keith said, it's ingrained in me (well, i'm a girl, but i still love heroic movies!) to love to watch the knight in shining armor defeat the dragon and save the maiden and/or people from sure death.
but gore? like i said, not for me. and in my mind, the saw movies are classified under that. it's just pointlessness. LOTR isn't pointless, in my opinion. it's good against evil. the saw movies (or any other idiotic, disgusting films you all can think of off the top of your heads) have no point. it's a crazed man, from what i've heard, giving innocent others a choice if they want to live or not. WHO should be giving us that choice? GOD. not any HUMAN. in my personal opinion, the saw movies are just simply demonic, it makes me sick to my stomach if i see previews for them. and i have a feeling that's the Spirit inside of me. LOTR, ever since the first time i watched them, i was fine with it. why? because it's not a waste of my God-given time. i'm not watching the elves, men, and wizards hack up goblins and orcs for no good reason. they're doing it to save the world, helloooo. and what's the point of the saw movies? this man just, uh, wants to have fun? WHO KNOWS. and that's just gross.
