CCM

I would like some of your open-minded thoughts on why Christian Contemporary Music is good/bad.

Is is possible to be neutral on this topic? I don't believe Contemporary Christian music is bad, but I don't care to listen to much of it myself. That's mainly a preference in music--I like quieter stuff, mainly instrumental. So for me, Contemporary Christian music isn't bad, but I don't prefer it either.

As far as witnessing goes, some people may think it's pretty cool to have music that "fits" in with today's genre. Some people prefer that music, which is okay with me. I see nothing inherently wrong with it.

The problem/good thing with/about Contemporary Christian music is not the music itself or the listeners--rather, it is the attitude with which people make the music and listen to it. Like my dad says, it comes back to what's in your heart. If you listen to CCM just to rebel against your parents or because you know people around you don't like your listening to it, that's wrong. If, however, the artists and yourself listen to it with the intent of glorifying and praising God, that's great!

Whatsoever you drink, whatsoever you eat, whatsoever you do, do it all to the glory of God...It's what is in your heart that matters. There is nothing inherently wrong with Contemporary Christian music--most of it was created to glorify God! The problem comes when we listen to it with wrong motives.

I listen to CCM pretty much every day. We have 2 radio stations that play CCM all the time. I don't agree with the words that are in some of the songs, and some are just repeatning the same thing over and over, but others have some really good, thought-provoking lyrics. I think it depends on the artist...some people just write songs about whatever comes to their head and sticks the word "God" in there somewhere. But others truly write what is Biblical. When you're listening, you have to be careful to make sure you're not getting any false teachings into your head.
I agree with the comment above...as long as it's glorifying to God and the words are true, then that's fine! But some bands and singers are becoming worldy and trying to sound like non-Christian singers to "fit in".

I could go on and on, but I gotta go...

i think it's something you have to work out with yourself and God, i have no problem with listening to christian rok etc etc etc, but i know some people that don't think it's right. "you need to work out your own salvation with fear and trembling' i think that is somewhere in corinthians....

I agree with you all. I think that we need to watch how much of our time we spend listening to any kind of music. I also think that a lot of the CCM bands started out good, but eventually fame and fortune got the wear and tear on them and they started getting worldly.
Emily, I agree with what you said, we need to analyze the words in the songs. One song in particular I don't like is JUST THE WAY I AM by big daddy weave. It comes across to me as the idea that, God loves you. Which is right. But take that a step further and people ask, Well then why should I change? If he loves me I will get a free ticket into heaven. Although this song probably wasn't meant to be accepted this way, we still need to watch out...you never know.

hm, I'll have to look up the lyrics to that song. I'm not a big fan of Big Daddy Weave anyways...

I don't know, to tell you the truth. The only reason I like them is that their songs are rich and the people look normal. (If you think that they look weird, check out superchic(k)) My bro says that they aren't rap.

no, Big Daddy Weave isn't rap. They're pretty much like all the other CCM bands...but I think the band members are a little bit older.

Yes, I agree that the people in some of the bands out there look weird. I would disagree with their clothing and hair styles, as well as their piercings, but if they are truly followers of Christ as they profess to be, then I don't have a problem listening to them. I just sort of avoid looking at the pictures in the lyrics. lol

*cough* would you be refering to most of the people i listen to?
actually, i think the only "normal" person i listen to is Jakie....

Jakie? Sorry never heard of them. The most normal people I have seen are Casting Crowns, Steve Curtis Chapman, Big Daddy Weave, Bebo Norman, Chris Rice, there's a lot of good artists out there. I am not too wild about the music like you said Allegra, I listen to it once in a while, but I'm not wild about it.

Jackie Velasquez??? Is that what you meant, Beth?

Hmm...there are the neutral and then there are the fanatics. Neither is bad, as long as it's not too extreme, I think. Remember #1 (and no, it's not me:P)!

i'm definitely very into CCM, but i'm also very into worship stuff, too.
i've grown up on: newsboys (the GOOD late 80's-90's rock), dctalk, keith green, rich mullins, burlap to cashmere.
along with those, i like: coldplay, anberlin, as cities burn, family force 5, relient k, tobymac, u2, switchfoot, hawk nelson, fm static, the almost, copeland, lifehouse, playradioplay!, mae, audio adrenaline, the rocket summer, flyleaf, until june, bethany dillon, jimmy eat world (very few), chase coy, jason reeves, colbie caillat, hillsong united, phil wickham, misty edwards, desperation band, thousand foot krutch, dead poetic, demon hunter, the showdown, leeland, delirious?, third day, underoath, the devil wears prada, grits, jordin sparks, chris brown, rihanna, alicia keys, vanessa carlton.
so if you actually took the time to read all that, you could say i'll listen to anything BUT country.
as you can tell, my music choices are very diverse. and i agree with all of you, sometimes CCM music stations can get kind of annoying. it's like, 'Jesus loves you!' all the time. okay, i get that. can you give me something more to think about, PLEASE?
another time, this one guy (no idea whom) tried to remake a keith green song. my mom turned the radio off, she was so ticked. it didn't even sound like the original! :|
as for the 'look' of bands and such, i could care less. if the bands are living their faith out, i really don't care if they have a thousand piercings and a hundred tats. it doesn't faze me. their hearts matter, that's it.

:]
